HUM is a collaborative effort between composers Marc Giguere, Alex Ring Gray, and Vicki Leona Nguyen, who met as classmates at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. After parting ways in 2018, the three reconvened at Giguere's home in Nashville to write and record HUM in a single afternoon during the summer of 2019.

The creative foundation was the scavenging and building of instruments between the composers. The work is structured in three sections derived from this collection: bowed metals, strings, and struck metals. These sections dovetail with one another, forming one extensive evolution through different sound environments. The resulting textures range from thin and delicate to dense washes of sound.

As a special addition, the record is available in a binaural headphone mix by immersive audio engineer Toshi Tsuruoka at Ecotone Lab.
